Fancy Flip Flops with Jems Jewels

Summer is just around the corner and sandal/flip flop season is on full blast!  I thought it would be a fun project for me and Hanna to make some fancified flip flops together.  We headed off to Hobby Lobby to pick up some supplies for our craft.  Once we were back home we got our supplies layed out and ready to go.   Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

Supplies

  • one pair of flip flops
  • gems, flowers, ribbon, etc. – whatever you’d love to decorate your flip flops with
  • something to protect your work surface – we used a paper bag
  • a marker
  •  UPDATE: I’m sad to say that after we used the X-TREME glue stick our gems ended up popping off of the flip flops.  So, I would recommend trying one of these instead:
  1. Use flip flops with fabric straps or wrap them with ribbon first and then let your child glue the gems on using X-TREME.  X-TREME is made to stick to fabric!
  2. Use flip flops with plastic straps but change the glue you are using to Elmer’s Plastic Cement.  However, I probably wouldn’t let your child use this on their own.
Supplies for Fancy Flip Flop craft

This project is insanely simple but, you can use this particular craft to talk with your child about patterns!  First things first, when you are involving children in your crafts be sure to protect your work space.  We used an opened up paper bag.  Then, dump the gems, or whatever else you’re decorating with, out onto the paper.

Flip Flop Patterns
Take your marker and draw two V shapes on your paper bag or a piece of paper. They should mirror the straps on a flip flop.  Now is a great time to introduce or strengthen your child’s skills in patterns.  With Hanna, our goal was to get two matching flip flops, both with a color, size and shape patterns that matched.
Once you’ve layed out a pattern that you like on your paper, the next step is totally optional…  Scrap your pattern and decide you just want to stick the gems on the flip flops whatever way you want and in whatever order you want.  Alright, we went with that plan.  (I suppressed my inner perfectionist and decided to let her artistic ability win with this one.)

Open your X-TREME School Glue Stick and apply the glue liberally to the back side of each gem as you go, one at a time, then immediately stick the gem onto the strap of the flip flop.  Press the gem onto the strap firmly with your fingers.  Repeat for each gem until you are satisfied with your end result.  Let them sit for 24 hours before wearing to make sure the glue is dry and you don’t lose any fanciness.

Flip Flops
I loved using Elmer’s X-TREME School Glue Stick for this project because, for the most part, Hanna (age 5) did the entire thing herself.  Normally I would have used a different glue and probably not let her do any of the gluing.  I really like having something stronger that is still easy for kids to use.  Enjoy the end result and tell your junior crafter what a great job they did!
