Oh my goodness, I’m feeling really overwhelmed lately.  We’re getting ready to move in a few weeks.  Not too far, just back to Dallas (from the suburbs.)  But it still requires packing up everything we own and moving it.  In the meantime, the kids have a turned our home into what looks like a giant toy tornado made it’s way through.  I have a toddler and a baby who need constant attention, and I’m really missing having my mom nearby.  Things would be much easier if I could drop them off at Grandma’s for a few hours here and there and just get some work done.   It’s also summer and there’s a ton of events and social things happening.  Then, there’s blogging deadlines to meet.  (What was I thinking saying yes to so many things?!)

Another thing weighing on my mind is whether or not we should keep (and store) a lot of our stuff, or just get rid of it.  We’re actually moving in with my mother-in-law for a year or so, so we can save up a really good down payment for a house.  She has most of the things we need and use on a daily basis and there’s no point in having duplicates out.  I would love to have a garage sale, but it’s summer and in the high 90s to 100s out here in Texas.  I could declutter by selling some stuff online.  Or, even better, maybe Nick and I can tag team it.  He can tackle our entertainment center and sell DVDs and games that have been collecting dust, and I’ll pull out the bins of kids clothes I’ve been hoarding and sell those.  Maybe we can convince the kids to sell their toys…?  Haha, not likely.  I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions.  Would you keep everything and pack it away (possibly having to pay for storage) or try to just let some of the stuff go before you move?  Also, any insights or tips on trying to pack and move with a toddler and a baby would be greatly appreciated!  (Oh, and don’t say to hire packers/movers.  That’s SO out of the budget.  Strictly DIY here.)

  1. I would start packing things up to give away, or sell to consignment, but the more things you get out of your house before the big day, the better you’ll feel. And, the easier it will be. Good luck!!

  2. I feel you – really I do. The movers are coming on Wednesday to load up our stuff. I personally refuse to put things in storage (mind you we’re moving into our own home, so there’s a difference there), and if it didn’t fit or I didn’t need it, it was donated or trashed.

Good luck, and I can’t wait to meet you in person soon!

    • I’m envious of your movers! I generally refuse to put stuff in storage too, but might have to suck it up this time. I’m trying to weigh the cost of paying for storage vs. just buying new stuff once we get into our house.

I hope your move goes smoothly! When are you guys going to officially be here?

      • LOL there was no way I was making an 800+ mile move without movers at least. This is the first time we’ve actually packed our own stuff though, and man it’s a lot of work! We *hopefully* will get there on the 14th, we get possession of our new place on the 15th and the movers deliver the stuff on the 16th. T minus 10 days till I can start unpacking! :)

  3. I would definitely check out local consignment. There may be a huge kids’ sale that you could consign the extra kid stuff to that would help you declutter. When it comes to getting rid of stuff that is duplicated, are you going to need it again when you purchase your new home? Or will you have it in your budget to replace it? How much is storage? I’d weigh those to decide which you do.

  4. Well,

My normal response would be to “Hire Movers!” All My Sons to be specific. ; ) But I completely understand. My suggestion would be to focus on one room at a time. So many people will start packing a room, and then start another, and another, and before you know it, you have half packed boxes everywhere! It gets really overwhelming, really quick. So Pack one room, stack your boxes on one wall of that room or move them to a staging area designated for all your packed boxes. Focusing on one room and one box at a time will keep the chaos down to a minimum and you will see work actually getting done.

  5. I asked friends over for help. Bribe them and laugh together. I also set a timer to get things done. SO helpful!! Good luck!!
